The Department of Lost Things casts you as a junior clerk in retrieval, working a sub-level of an archive that stores things people have lost. You sign in by name, you are given a clearance, and you are handed a trolley. The work is cataloguing - matching objects to cases, filing them in the ledger, moving through the casebook. What makes it worth doing is that the objects are written with real care. A key that is cold and stays cold and has no opinion about you. A ring cut through in one place with a jeweller's saw. A trumpet, dented, six holes now purely decorative, that plays one note and it is a good note. A coat that smells of rain, tobacco and a hospital corridor. None of it is explained. The catalogue entries are short and the implications are left entirely to you, which is the whole effect: you are filing somebody's worst day and the paperwork does not acknowledge it. It is quiet, slow and text-led, and closer to a short story you move through than a game you play. Progress is kept between visits.
